Inspired by the great saxophone trios of Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson, Songbook is a trio dedicated to playing the music of the Great American Songbook. Propelled by long standing friends as associates Tim Bowen – bass and Ben Riley – drums, Songbook endeavours to stretch this wonderful genre of compositions to the brink without loosing the vital essence of jazz, swing and melody.

I really enjoy the challenge of playing these songs without a piano, there is so much space and beautiful harmony to build upon.
I spent a lot of time listening and hanging out with New York tenor great Ralph Lalama performing with his trio, his powerful sound and great sense of swing effected me deeply. I try to get that same feel when I play with this group.
To play in this setting effectively we all must speak the same language. It is a treat to work with Ben and Tim two great friends of mine. Both have a deep understanding of the tradition of the music and that is evident when we play. |

The trio can be heard at the Black Note, Adelaide’s newest jazz venue.
